WSU QB John Mateer Chooses Oklahoma for Next Season

WSU quarterback John Mateer has announced his decision to transfer to the University of Oklahoma, joining his new offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle. This move comes two days after Mateer entered the transfer portal and follows a tumultuous week for WSU fans, who also saw head coach Jake Dickert leave for Wake Forest earlier in the week.

With Mateer now set to play for Oklahoma, the Cougars will face an uncertain future at quarterback for their upcoming Holiday Bowl game against Syracuse. Acting head coach Pete Kaligis will lead the team, and Zevi Eckhaus is expected to be under center.

The transfer to Oklahoma was a highly anticipated move, with an “unnamed SEC school” rumored to have offered Mateer a nearly $3 million name, worth roughly three times the package WSU presented. The Texas native had a standout season as the Cougars’ starting quarterback, ranking 16th in passing yards and tied for fifth in passing touchdowns.

Mateer’s impressive performance on the field, including 44 total touchdowns and an average of 330 yards per game, led many to speculate that he would end up at Oklahoma. The move sets a new chapter for Mateer, who will be reunited with his former offensive coordinator Arbuckle.
