A children’s playground in northern England has been temporarily shut down after dozens of unexploded World War II-era bombs were discovered on site. The discovery was made during a planned overhaul at Scotts Play Park in Wooler, Northumberland.
Local officials called in bomb disposal experts to investigate the find and remove the ordnance. So far, 174 devices have been uncovered, including 65 practice bombs and 90 additional ones.
The company responsible for the excavation believes all the bombs need to be found and removed before the park can reopen. It is also possible that some of these were used to train the local Home Guard volunteer army during World War II.
