Elon Musk recently attributed a cyberattack that took down X to a “massive cyberattack” carried out by a large, coordinated group or country. However, security researchers are disputing his claims, suggesting that the actual cause of the attack may be more mundane.
According to a new report in Wired, experts have found little evidence linking Ukrainian IP addresses to the DDoS attack. In fact, one researcher stated that Ukraine was not among the top 20 countries of origin involved in the attack. The investigation also revealed that X’s systems were left vulnerable due to inadequate security measures, specifically the failure to properly secure its Cloudflare DDoS protection.
X had initially suggested that a large number of resources were involved in the attack, but it has since secured its servers. This incident is not unique to Musk, as he previously blamed an unspecified “cyberattack” for a planned livestream failure last year. The Verge reported at the time that there was no such attack.
X did not respond to a request for comment on this matter.
