Social media giant X has launched a free version of its chatbot, Grok, allowing non-premium users to access the AI tool with limited features. The move comes after previously requiring premium subscription access.
Grok’s new free tier limits users to 10 questions every two hours, three image analyses per day, and four image generations daily. In contrast, users with X’s Premium ($7/month) and Premium+ ($14/month) subscriptions can ask up to 50 questions per day.
To use Grok, users must have an account at least seven days old linked to a phone number. The chatbot is designed to assist with tasks such as customer inquiries, research, coding support, and more.
X has not commented on the rollout, but it’s clear the company aims to expand its user base through this move. Grok’s popularity may be limited compared to rival ChatGPT from OpenAI, which boasts 300 million active weekly users. Meta’s chatbot, meanwhile, has nearly 600 million monthly active users.
xAI, Elon Musk’s AI firm, is behind the development of Grok. The company’s recent supercomputer site in Memphis provides serious computing capabilities and is being expanded with a large graphics processing unit capacity. xAI is considered a competitor to OpenAI, Microsoft, and other leading AI firms.
