X Inc., the social media platform, is recovering from a data center fire that brought down its site for some users on Thursday. The company reported a “site-wide outage” starting at 11AM PT, which was resolved by Friday morning. However, degraded performance issues with login features persist.
The fire occurred at a data center leased by X in Oregon, near Portland, according to reports. Firefighters responded to the blaze at 10:21AM PT and were on-scene for several hours. The cause of the fire is attributed to batteries, but X has not commented on the incident.
This outage follows previous technical issues faced by X, including a data center relocation controversy in 2022. When Elon Musk took over as CEO, he pushed to move servers from California to Oregon to save money, despite initial estimates suggesting it would take months. The hasty relocation resulted in weeks of technical problems and an investigation by the Federal Trade Commission.
As of Friday morning, X’s developer platform page reported that the outage had been resolved, but users continued to experience issues with direct messages and other features.
