Xbox Ally X Review: A Promising Handheld with Room for Improvement

I recently spent two weeks with the Xbox Ally X handheld console and found that its potential is clear, but so are the problems holding it back from delivering the experience Xbox aims for. While I love the idea of a portable Xbox console, my initial excitement was tempered by issues like a buggy install process and laggy app performance.

The device’s gaming capabilities are impressive, particularly with powerful games like ARC Raiders running at over 100 FPS. However, the lackluster user interface in the Xbox App makes it feel janky and unresponsive at times. The inability to add my own games and apps directly to the App is also a major drawback.

Despite these issues, I still have faith in Xbox’s vision for this console. With some significant updates and refinements, I believe the Ally X could become something special. As a lifelong Xbox fan since 2001, I’m excited to see where Microsoft takes this project next year with its 25th anniversary celebration.

For now, I recommend holding off on purchasing the device until these issues are addressed. With some tweaks and improvements, I have no doubt that the Xbox Ally X will become an amazing portable gaming console for those who crave a seamless Xbox experience on-the-go.
