Xbox CEO Phil Spencer Shifts Focus Away from Rival Console Ports

Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer has clarified his company’s strategy regarding porting games to rival consoles. In an interview, Spencer stated that he is no longer trying to persuade Nintendo Switch and PS5 owners to switch to Xbox Series X|S. Instead, he believes games should be the main focus, rather than console wars.

Spencer cited a 70% revenue share as a reason for not forcing players onto his platform. However, he also wants to allow fans of Microsoft’s franchises to play their games on other consoles without being swayed by Xbox exclusives.

The company will no longer hide PS5 and Nintendo Switch logos in its game showcases, opting for transparency instead. Spencer reaffirmed his commitment to supporting native hardware and systems, including a rumored next-gen Xbox handheld console.

Additionally, Spencer expressed concerns about the rise of live service games, stating that Game Pass allows for more “games with beginnings, middles, and ends.” He also noted that Overwatch 2 director believes it’s challenging to design a non-free-to-play shooter today.
