Microsoft has raised the prices of its Xbox Series S and Series X consoles, as well as some compatible controllers, citing “market conditions.” The company also announced higher prices for new games during the holiday season due to increased development costs.
The price hikes affect the entry-level Xbox Series S with 512 GB of storage, now costing $379.99 in the US, up from $299.99. The flagship Xbox Series X will go for $599.99, also an increase from its previous price.
This move comes as Nintendo recently announced a more expensive next-generation Switch and Sony has also increased prices for its PlayStation 5 console and online subscription service, PlayStation Plus.
Microsoft attributed the price changes to rising costs due to President Donald Trump’s tariffs on imports. However, existing video game titles will not be affected by the price hikes.
The company cited higher development costs for popular games like Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, which reportedly cost over $700 million to make. Despite this, Microsoft saw an increase in sales of some of its titles during the fiscal third quarter.
