Obsidian Entertainment’s new role-playing game, Avowed, has received mostly positive reviews from critics for its world design and combat systems. The game is currently sitting at an 80 on Metacritic across 58 reviews, with many reviewers praising the immersive experience and mechanics.
Reviews from outlets such as VG247 (10/10), Digital Trends (9/10), and Inverse (9/10) highlight the game’s focus on delivering a fun and memorable world to explore. Pure Xbox praised its fast-paced fights, colorful environments, and excellent exploration.
However, not all reviews were glowing. IGN gave Avowed a 7/10, stating that while it has awesome worldbuilding and stellar character writing, it plays it quite safe with a by-the-numbers fantasy adventure. The worst review came from a 6/10 rating, which was disappointed by the main quest and found the combat dreary.
The game’s average score is largely skewed by lower outliers, but overall, critics are praising Avowed for its ability to deliver an engaging experience. With an early release on February 13 for those who preordered the Premium Edition, fans are eagerly awaiting their chance to play the game.
Avowed launches on February 18, 2025, across Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC via Steam, the Xbox App, and Battle.net. As an Xbox first-party game, the standard edition is included in Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass.
