Black Myth: Wukong developer Game Science has criticized the Xbox Series S console, blaming its limitations for the lack of an Xbox version of their game. The CEO, Feng Ji, stated that the 10GB shared memory constraint on the Xbox Series S is difficult to optimize without years of experience.
The issue arises due to Microsoft’s Xbox release policy, which requires games to be released across both the Xbox Series X and S consoles. This has caused difficulties for developers in the past, such as with Baldur’s Gate 3 and Alan Wake 2, which struggled with performance on the Xbox Series S.
Game Science co-founder Feng Ji lamented the lack of an Xbox version during a recent celebration of Black Myth: Wukong’s Game of the Year win at the 2024 Steam awards. Despite the game’s massive commercial success, selling over 18 million copies in two weeks and generating $700 million in revenue, there is still no release date for the Xbox version.
Microsoft has insisted that the delay is not due to Xbox platform limitations but rather an exclusivity deal with Sony. However, many developers have reported similar issues with the Xbox Series S, including VFX artist who worked on an Xbox Series X and S game.
