Ubisoft has announced that it will be ending development and sunsetting its free-to-play team-based shooter XDefiant, just over a year after its official launch. The game initially garnered significant attention, with over 1 million players in its closed beta last year and more than 10 million players in its first two weeks of open play.
However, the game’s momentum failed to sustain itself, with concurrent player numbers plummeting below 20,000 by this fall. Despite this, Ubisoft cited “difficult consequences” as the reason for the shutdown, which will see the closure of several production studios and significant job losses.
Players who joined XDefiant before December 3rd, 2024, will still be able to access the game until June 3rd, 2025. The planned Season 3 content will launch, and Ubisoft is also refunding those who purchased the Ultimate Founders Pack, as well as players who bought in-game currency (VC) and DLC within the last month.
