XGS Energy and Meta Platforms have partnered to develop a 150 MW advanced geothermal energy project in New Mexico. The project will utilize XGS’s proprietary technology, which enables the production of electricity from hot rock resources without relying on water. This is a significant development as it expands the potential for reliable baseload geothermal energy.
New Mexico has vast untapped geothermal potential, with over 160 GW of unexplored resources according to a recent report by Project InnerSpace. The project will support Meta’s data center operations in New Mexico and demonstrate the feasibility of clean, water-independent baseload power.
The partnership aims to create good-paying jobs, strengthen the grid with reliable power, and position New Mexico as a national leader in next-generation renewable energy. The two-phase agreement is expected to be operational by 2030 and will be sited on the PNM electric grid.
XGS Energy’s technology decouples geothermal energy production from historical constraints, making it easier to deploy and finance. Meta’s investment in this project is part of its efforts to support innovative clean energy initiatives.
