Chinese President Xi Jinping has assured Malaysia that China will be a collaborative partner in addressing global economic shocks and promoting stability in the region. During his state visit to Malaysia, which began on Tuesday, Xi emphasized the importance of working together with Southeast Asian countries to combat unilateralism and protectionism.
Xi’s comments come as the US has imposed tariffs on Chinese goods, sparking concerns about the impact on the global economy. The Chinese leader is also visiting Vietnam and Cambodia this week, where he will promote Beijing as a source of stability in the region.
Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim praised Xi’s visit, saying that China was a leader that offered steadiness and reliability in uncertain times. He also criticized the US for its economic policies, which he described as “economic tribalism.”
Xi has promised to sign a free trade agreement with Malaysia and Vietnam, aiming to counter the US decision to decouple the two economies. The agreements will focus on services, trade, industrial parks, and agricultural exports.
China is seeking to strengthen its ties with Southeast Asia through the Belt and Road Initiative, which includes projects such as a $11.2 billion Chinese railway project in Malaysia.
