Xiaomi Secures 3nm SoC Milestone with XRING 01 Chipset

Xiaomi has announced its entry into the world of custom-designed chipsets with the launch of its XRING 01, marking a significant milestone for the Chinese tech giant. By securing this achievement, Xiaomi is now poised to become the first Chinese firm to commercially produce a 3nm SoC.

The new chipset, powered by TSMC’s second-generation 3nm process (N3E), has already begun shipping with the Xiaomi 15S Pro and Xiaomi Pad 7 Ultra devices. However, it remains unclear whether this custom SoC will be featured in other devices from the company.

While Xiaomi’s XRING 01 is a notable achievement, it may not necessarily mark an end to its reliance on Qualcomm and MediaTek for future chipsets. According to recent estimates, it could take several years for Xiaomi to become fully self-sufficient in producing its own chipsets.

A new report by CNBC suggests that even if the US government does voice concerns over Xiaomi’s XRING 01, it may not significantly impact the company’s supply chain. For now, around 40% of Xiaomi’s smartphones still feature chipsets from Qualcomm and MediaTek.

Xiaomi’s decision to invest billions in developing its own custom chipsets was a strategic move to reduce costs in the long run. However, it is unlikely that the partnership with Qualcomm and MediaTek will be abandoned anytime soon.

The global landscape surrounding China’s technological advancements remains uncertain, but Xiaomi’s XRING 01 represents a significant victory for the company and China as a whole. As the US considers potential export controls on Chinese tech firms, the impact of this development on Xiaomi’s future supply chain is still to be seen.
