Xreal has revealed its first pair of commercial augmented reality glasses, Project Aura, which will use Google’s Android XR technology. The device features a modified processor called X1S in the glasses frame, paired with a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip in the separate “compute puck” attached to a pocket-sized device.
The glasses’ design includes a new flat prism lens that provides a wider field of view (FOV) than previous devices, allowing users to experience a more immersive AR experience. The Aura glasses will also feature front-facing sensors for hand tracking and added functionality akin to Meta Quest 3 and Apple Vision Pro.
However, the device’s specs raise concerns about battery capacity for heavy use, as the separate processing puck may limit battery life. Xreal has not provided details on release dates or prices, but it is likely that these will be high due to the complexity of the design and the cost of the necessary components.
Unlike previous AR devices, Project Aura uses a tethered connection, which means users cannot easily disconnect from the device without removing the glasses themselves. This may make the device less discreet than other smart glasses on the market.
