New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone expressed concern over the harsh weather conditions during their game against the San Francisco Giants, which ended in a 9-1 victory for the Giants. The cold and windy night, with rain steady throughout, made it difficult for players to grip the ball.
Boone spoke with umpire crew chief Lance Barksdale and discussed his concerns about player safety. He feared that the poor conditions could change the game’s dynamics, impacting pitcher control. Yankees catcher Austin Wells echoed Boone’s sentiments, stating that some up-and-in pitches were caused by the windy conditions.
The Giants took an early lead, scoring 5-0 in the first inning. Rookie pitcher Yoendrys Gómez struggled with his fastball, which averaged 90.1 mph, down from his season average. When asked if he blamed the weather for his rough performance, Gomez said it was not a factor but admitted to some difficulty gripping the ball.
The poor conditions led to a 26-minute delay and ultimately resulted in the game being suspended due to wind and rain. Boone acknowledged that player safety was his top priority throughout the game.
