The New York Yankees have made significant roster adjustments ahead of the MLB trade deadline. After bringing in three new relievers, they optioned two relievers and released veteran right-hander Marcus Stroman on Friday.
Stroman’s departure makes room for Camilo Doval, David Bednar, and Jake Bird to join the 26-man roster. The move also clears a spot for rookie Cam Schlittler, who has shown promise in his first three starts. Stroman’s release comes as no surprise, given his struggling performance with the Yankees this season.
The 34-year-old pitcher struggled with velocity and stuff, posting an 86 Stuff+ score, which is one of the lowest since the start of 2024. His fastball velocity averaged 90.1 mph, ranking third-lowest in the sport. Despite being an All-Star with the Chicago Cubs in 2023, Stroman failed to replicate his past success with the Yankees.
The Yankees are now relying on Schlittler, who has showcased a fastball that can touch 100 mph, and rookie Luis Gil to bolster their starting rotation. Manager Aaron Boone expressed confidence in the duo’s readiness for full-time rotation roles, citing improvements needed from Schlittler on his secondary offerings.
