New York Yankees right-hander Marcus Stroman did not participate in the first two spring training workouts, according to manager Aaron Boone. Stroman reported for his physical on Tuesday but chose not to attend the team’s morning workout on Wednesday and Thursday.
Boone acknowledged that he had an idea about Stroman’s absence before speaking with him earlier in the week. However, he declined to disclose Stroman’s reasoning for missing workouts, citing the need to respect the player’s decision. Boone stated that Stroman will likely join the team within the next couple of days, as required by Major League Baseball’s collective bargaining agreement.
The Yankees’ rotation is currently set with five starters, including Gerrit Cole and Max Fried. Stroman, a two-time All-Star, does not project to make the rotation but has an $18.5 million salary this season with a player option for 2026.
Manager Aaron Boone expressed his desire to have Stroman at camp but acknowledged that players are allowed to delay their arrival until February 22. Cole, who is recovering from an elbow injury, reported feeling good after throwing in a live bullpen session on Thursday.
Stroman’s decision has raised questions about its potential impact on teammates, with Cole expressing confidence in the pitcher’s abilities. Stroman recorded a 4.31 ERA in his first season with the Yankees and will be key to the team’s success this year.
