The New York Yankees made history in their first innings against the Milwaukee Brewers at Yankee Stadium on Saturday. After starting pitcher Max Fried kept the top of the first inning scoreless, the bats exploded.
Paul Goldschmidt led off the game with a solo home run off Nestor Cortes’ first pitch, giving the Yankees an early 1-0 lead. The crowd erupted as Cody Bellinger followed with another home run on the next pitch, making it 2-0. Aaron Judge then crushed a 468-foot shot to center field to put the Yanks up 3-0.
This consecutive three-home-run sequence marked the first time in Yankees history that a team led off a game with back-to-back home runs. The feat also tied an MLB record, last seen in 2000.
The scoring didn’t stop there as catcher Austin Wells hit another solo home run, extending the lead to 4-0. This was the first time in team history that the Yankees had four home runs in a single inning.
However, the Brewers refused to back down and cut into the lead with three runs in the top of the second. The game continued with the Yankees responding with Anthony Volpe’s three-run home run, which extended their lead to 7-3.
In the third inning, Judge hit a grand slam for his second home run, putting the Yanks up 12-3. This was followed by Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s solo home run, giving the Yankees a 13-run lead.
At the time of writing, the final score is 13-3 in favor of the Yankees.
