The New York Yankees unleashed their offense, hitting nine home runs in a 20-9 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday. The team’s success can be attributed to its new bat design, which features a larger barrel and a thinner handle.
According to Yankees broadcaster Michael Kay, the team used different bats to increase the chances of making contact with the ball. “The Yankee front office did a study on Anthony Volpe’s swing and found that he hit most of his balls in the label,” Kay explained. The bats were designed to move more wood into the label, increasing the mass and striking potential.
Former Yankees infielder Kevin Smith attributed the team’s success to the expertise of MIT physicist Dr. Lenny, who invented the “Torpedo” barrel design. This design increases the number of barrels in contact with the ball, decreasing misses and increasing home runs.
The new bat design proved effective on Saturday, as the Yankees’ top batters Aaron Judge, Paul Goldschmidt, and Cody Bellinger hit three consecutive home runs off Brewers starter Nestor Cortes, the first time a team has achieved this feat since 1988.
