America’s Next Top Model alum Yaya DaCosta recently revealed a secret reunion with host Tyra Banks at the 2025 Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards. The emotional encounter, captured on Instagram video, helped heal past trauma from her time on the show.
DaCosta shared her experience after Banks gave a speech addressing ANTM’s legacy and criticisms of its casting and challenges. In response, DaCosta reflected on her own journey, describing how she felt compelled to speak out about the trauma caused by the show’s manipulative editing, blackface photo shoots, and body dysmorphia-inducing content.
DaCosta praised Banks’ forward-thinking casting, which featured models with different body types and backgrounds. She also commended Banks for championing plus-size models across 24 cycles and featuring trans model Isis King on cycle 11.
Their reunion, DaCosta said, was a moment of forgiveness, appreciation, and love. In her video message, she encouraged viewers to let go of their trauma and receive support when needed. “Something so magical happens when you just make the choice to let something go,” she said.
