Yemen’s presidential council has appointed Salem Saleh Bin Braikas as the country’s new prime minister after his predecessor, Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak, resigned due to “many difficulties”. The decision comes amid a power struggle between bin Mubarak and Rashad Al-Alimi, head of the council. Bin Mubarak had clashed with Al-Alimi over his powers, particularly after being refused permission to dismiss 12 government ministers.
Bin Mubarak, who served as foreign minister before becoming prime minister in February 2024, had faced opposition from the Houthi militiamen who kidnapped him in 2015. The United States has been conducting airstrikes against the Houthis, with the largest operation since US President Donald Trump took office in January.
Yemen has been embroiled in a civil war for over a decade, with the Houthis controlling most of the country and the internationally recognized government relocating to Aden. The situation remains volatile, with the ongoing conflict affecting commercial shipping in the Red Sea.
