Yemen’s Houthi Rebels Launch Missile Attack on Northern Israel

Yemen’s Houthi rebels have fired a missile at northern Israel for the first time, according to the Israeli military. The attack occurred early Wednesday morning and prompted sirens in Haifa, Krayot, and other areas west of the Sea of Galilee.

The Israeli military said an interceptor was launched towards the missile and it was likely successfully intercepted. However, the rebels claimed the attack targeted Haifa with a hypersonic missile, which is a claim that has been made before but never succeeded in reaching its target.

The US continues to launch airstrikes against the Houthis, targeting areas such as Hodeida, Marib, and Saada governorates. The group has reportedly shot down another American MQ-9 Reaper drone over Yemen’s Hajjah governorate.

The Houthis have stepped up their attacks on American drones flying over Yemen in response to the US military campaign. They claim to have downed 26 MQ-9s over the last decade, using surface-to-air missiles that can destroy aircraft.

The US is targeting the Houthis due to their attacks on shipping in the Red Sea and on Israel. The group’s leader, Abedi Khamis al-Muqri, has threatened to target “Israeli” ships again if aid is blocked from entering the Gaza Strip.

A new US operation against the Houthis began on March 15, which is more extensive than previous attacks under President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden. The campaign aims to reduce trade disruptions in the Red Sea corridor, where over $1 trillion worth of goods pass annually.

The impact of the US airstrike campaign has been difficult to assess due to lack of information from both sides. However, a strike on the Ras Isa fuel port killed at least 74 people and wounded 171 others last week, marking one of the deadliest attacks in the American-led campaign.
