A South Korean court has cancelled an arrest warrant against President Yoon Suk Yeol, paving the way for his release from jail while awaiting trial on insurrection charges. The Seoul Central District Court lifted the warrant after ruling that the investigative agency had exceeded its authority and citing “questions about the legality” of the investigation process.
President Yoon was arrested in January on criminal charges related to imposing martial law and fomenting an insurrection. He resisted arrest for two weeks, but a court decision allowing him to stand trial while not being physically detained marks a significant development.
Yoon still faces impeachment proceedings, with the Constitutional Court expected to rule soon on whether to uphold his impeachment. The ruling party said the cancellation of his arrest warrant was unrelated to the impeachment case, and Yoon has maintained his defiance throughout the process. A national election to choose a new president would be held within two months if the impeachment is upheld.
