South Korea’s impeached President Yoon Suk-yeol spent his first night in jail after a court approved his formal arrest warrant on Sunday. He was arrested last week in a dawn raid and charged with insurrection over his botched declaration of martial law.
Yoon, who is facing an indictment and trial, was assigned a standard 12-square-metre cell at the Seoul Detention Centre. Unlike other inmates, he will be kept separate from them due to his high-profile status.
The Korea Correctional Service revealed that Yoon was placed in “one of the standard rooms used by regular inmates,” according to Commissioner General Shin Yong-hae. This move aimed to prevent him from destroying evidence or interfering with the investigation.
