YouTube has begun testing technology in the US that can predict if a user is under 18, and automatically add restrictions to their account. The platform aims to provide better protections for younger users.
The “age-estimation model” uses AI to determine a user’s age based on YouTube activity and longevity of the account. If the system determines a user is likely under 18, it will place restrictions on their account. These restrictions include showing only non-personalized ads, enabling digital wellbeing tools, and blocking access to age-restricted videos.
Creators on the platform may also experience changes, such as setting uploads as private by default for anyone and restricting earnings from gifts on vertical live streams. However, YouTube expects these changes to have a limited impact on most creators.
The company says it is committed to providing a safe and enriching experience for young users while preserving their privacy.
