YouTuber Uncovers GTA 5’s Electrical Grid Mystery

GTA 5 fans may be surprised to learn that the game’s powerlines are more than just a design quirk – they actually follow a surprisingly complex route. In his latest video, YouTuber Any Austin has been investigating the game’s electrical grid system, tracing the transmission towers and substations in Los Santos.

Austin begins by noting that the wires don’t need to connect to anything in real life, but instead follow a logical path through the city. He starts at the north-east of Los Santos and follows the transmission towers into the city, eventually leading to a substation. However, he discovers that some substations are connected to transmission towers while others are not.

To understand why this inconsistency exists, Austin turned to civil engineer Grady Hillhouse from Practical Engineering. Hillhouse notes that many errors in the game’s electrical grid system, but says it’s meant to look normal from a distance. In fact, the density of wires per utility pole in GTA 5 is “genuinely very impressive,” showcasing a level of detail not seen in previous games.

As Austin continues his investigation, he finds that some lines of transmission towers do connect to substations at power plants. While this means the game doesn’t have a fully functional electrical grid, it’s clear that Rockstar has put a lot of thought into its design.

Austin’s video is just one example of how GamesRadar+ will delve into the often-overlooked details of games. By examining these minutiae, we can gain a deeper understanding of the worlds and systems that make great gaming experiences possible.
