Zack Steffen Returns to USMNT in Thrilling Win

Zack Steffen made his USMNT debut after a three-year absence, leading the U.S. to a 3-0 win over Costa Rica on Wednesday night. Steffen, who hadn’t played since March 2022 due to injury, returned to goal duty and made two world-class saves in a game that saw Brian White, Caden Clark, and Patrick Agyemang score their first international goals without European-based players.

White scored in the 21st minute, his first international goal, after breaking a defender’s tackle and beating goalkeeper Esteban Alvarado. Clark followed up with a clinical finish in the 77th minute, while Agyemang added a brace, including one on either end of stoppages in the 90th minute.

Coach Mauricio Pochettino praised Steffen for his performance, calling him “great” and noting his ability to keep the ball at his feet. Steffen, now 29, has struggled with injuries but recently rejoined MLS’s Colorado outfit after spending time with Manchester City in the Premier League.

The U.S., which extended its winning streak to four games, is set to face Panama on March 20 as Europe-based players return for training ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Meanwhile, Costa Rica made its first appearance since hiring Miguel Herrera, featuring four starters and a mix of local talent.
