Zack Wheeler Out with Venous Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler will miss the remainder of the season due to venous thoracic outlet syndrome, according to the team’s announcement. The diagnosis was made after a blood clot removal surgery and further evaluation, which recommended surgery at a later date.

According to medical information from the Mayo Clinic, venous thoracic outlet syndrome involves pressure on blood vessels or nerves between the neck and shoulder, potentially causing numbness in the fingers. Recovery is expected to take six to eight months.

Wheeler, a three-time All-Star, was placed on the injured list earlier this week after throwing 97 pitches against the Washington Nationals last Friday. He had an impressive season for the first-place Phillies, boasting a 10-5 record, 2.71 ERA, and 195 strikeouts in 24 starts over 149 2/3 innings.
