Zakaria Zubeidi Blames UK and US for ‘Harm They’ve Caused’

Freed Palestinian prisoner Zakaria Zubeidi has blamed the UK and US for “the harm they’ve caused” to him and his family, according to an interview with Sky News. Zubeidi was released this week as part of a ceasefire agreement after being held in Israeli prison since 2019.

Found guilty by an Israeli military court of involvement in terrorism, Zubeidi believes that the international community, particularly Britain, France, and the US, is responsible for Israel’s occupation of the West Bank. He claimed that freedom has no price but that the world has denied him his freedom, particularly with regards to those countries.

Zubeidi has been a symbol of Palestinian resistance and has admitted involvement in a 2002 bombing that killed six people. However, he has also been acclaimed by many in the West Bank as a hero. He expressed concern for the safety and well-being of Palestinians, calling on the world to grant him his freedom.

The Israeli authorities have banned Zubeidi from returning to Jenin, where he grew up in a refugee camp. Instead, he remains in Ramallah, where thousands gathered to welcome him back. Former Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh welcomed Zubeidi and expressed hope for an enduring peace deal.
