Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned that the days of guaranteed US support for Europe are over, urging the continent to come together and create a united army and foreign policy. Zelensky made these comments during a speech at the Munich Security Conference, where he also expressed concerns about the recent phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump.
Zelensky stated that Trump’s conversation with Putin did not mention America’s need for European involvement in negotiations, suggesting that the old days of automatic US support are behind them. He added that Europe must adjust to this new reality and be prepared to make its own decisions on key issues.
The Ukrainian president also called for a united European army, citing the potential loss of military support from the US as a reason for Europe’s need to take action. Zelensky reiterated that peace talks on ending the conflict in Ukraine cannot proceed without Kyiv’s involvement and accused Putin of aiming to “carve up the world” through his one-on-one meetings with Trump.
In a bid to pressure European leaders into taking decisive action, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk echoed Zelensky’s sentiments, warning that Europe needs a plan of action concerning Ukraine or risk being decided upon by other global players.
