Zelenskyy Sees NATO as Key to Security, But Offers Alternative

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of NATO in ensuring Ukraine’s security, but also proposed creating a different form of NATO within Ukraine if necessary. Speaking at the Munich Conference on February 15, Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine’s NATO membership remains a top priority, and he identified key borders that would serve as a strong security line for Europe.

Zelenskyy highlighted Russia’s influence over NATO decisions, particularly with Russian leader Vladimir Putin’s power to block agreements. Despite this, the Ukrainian president noted that it was Ukraine’s own military forces that stopped Russia in their tracks, not NATO troops or countries. The Ukrainian leader suggested that creating a new form of NATO within Ukraine could be an option if existing membership is not possible.

In his proposal, Zelenskyy proposed establishing a security line along Ukraine’s eastern border, as well as the borders of neighboring Belarus, the Baltic states, and Finland. He argued that this would be the strongest security line for all of Europe, aligning with international law.
