Zoe Saldaña Apologizes for Oscars Win After Mexican Criticism

Actress Zoe Saldaña has apologized to Mexicans who felt offended by her film “Emilia Pérez” after winning the Best Supporting Actress award at the 2025 Oscars. In a statement, Saldaña expressed regret that many Mexicans were hurt by the movie and assured that she and her team spoke from a place of love.

Saldaña explained that the heart of the film was not about Mexico, but rather about four women from different backgrounds who are struggling to survive systemic oppression. She emphasized that these women’s stories are universal and relatable.

The actress also stated that she would stand by her views but is open to discussing the film with Mexicans to better understand their concerns. Saldaña welcomed the opportunity to have a respectful conversation to improve the movie.

Saldaña, who stars in the musical alongside Karla Sofía Gascón and Selena Gomez, has secured the Best Supporting Actress honour on Sunday’s Oscars ceremony.
