Zoe Saldaña Defends ‘Emilia Pérez’ Amid Criticism from Mexicans

Zoe Saldaña has responded to criticism that the film “Emilia Pérez” is “hurtful” to Mexicans after her Oscar win. Saldaña received the best supporting actress award for her role in the movie.

In an interview following her win, a Mexican reporter asked Saldaña about the lack of representation and attention given to Mexico as a whole. Saldaña apologized for any offense caused and explained that the film’s focus was on universal themes, not specifically on Mexico or its culture.

She stated that the four main characters could have been from different countries and still be considered “universal women struggling with systemic oppression.” Saldaña expressed her willingness to engage in a respectful conversation with her Mexican colleagues about how the character of Emilia Pérez could have been portrayed better.

The film has faced criticism for its trans representation, Spanish language use, and depiction of Mexican cartels. The director’s comments on the Spanish language and previous social media posts by star Karla Sofía Gascón have also sparked controversy.
