A new fleet of self-driving taxis, backed by Amazon, will soon hit the streets of Las Vegas, offering public rides for the first time. The Zoox robotaxis are 10 years in the making and aim to redefine transportation with a premium experience. Each vehicle can accommodate four passengers facing each other, creating a social atmosphere. Riders can book their taxi through an app, with prices set to be competitive with existing services.
Zoox has been testing its vehicles with advanced technology and sensors to ensure safety. The company’s vision is to reduce the need for personal car ownership, making transportation more efficient and accessible. Gatik Autonomous Vehicles expert Rich Steiner believes self-driving cars can make public roads safer due to their defensive driving style, which makes quicker decisions than human drivers.
Las Vegas will be the first city to launch Zoox robotaxis, followed by San Francisco. The company plans to start in dense cities before expanding nationwide.
