Mark Zuckerberg is pinning his hopes on 2025 as the year when AI-powered glasses become the next big computing platform. The Meta CEO believes that artificial intelligence will make these wearable devices more appealing to a wider audience, making them a game-changer for the tech industry.
Despite years of attempts by tech giants to create wearables that people would buy, the market has yet to catch on. However, Zuckerberg thinks this could be different. Sales of Meta’s Ray-Ban augmented reality glasses have been a pleasant surprise, and the company is working on an even more powerful headset called Orion.
However, revenue for Meta’s Reality Labs unit remained flat in the fourth quarter of 2024, with sales increasing only 1.1% compared to the previous year. The company has also lost over $60 billion on its metaverse projects and wearable devices.
Zuckerberg attributes this lack of progress to a simple reason: people haven’t yet seen the value in wearing AI-powered glasses. But he is confident that AI will change everything, making these devices more useful and appealing to a broader audience.
“There are many people who wear glasses,” Zuckerberg said on his company’s earnings call. “It’s hard for me to imagine that, 10 years from now, all glasses won’t be AI-powered.”
