The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a revised rule that will allow whole foods like oranges, salmon, and other fruits to be labeled as “healthy”. The change, which is the first in 30 years, aims to update the existing guidelines for using the term.
Currently, only products with low amounts of added sugar or saturated fats can qualify as healthy. However, under the new rule, whole foods will be eligible for the label, regardless of their calorie count or nutrient profile. The FDA is working on a new logo that manufacturers can use if they meet the updated standards.
The revised rule may impact companies that claim their breakfast cereals are “healthy”, as the term may no longer be applicable.
