A rare meteorite has been caught on camera after it crashed outside a front door in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. The incident was recorded by home security-camera footage, showing a puff of smoke and the sound of an explosion.
The meteorite is significant not only because it’s one of the few found in Canada but also because it provides rare evidence of a meteorite falling on Earth. According to Dr. Chris Herd, a professor at the University of Alberta, this is the first recorded video of a meteorite hitting the surface with sound.
Homeowner Joe Velaidum captured the footage on July 25, 2024, just before he left his home to walk their dogs. He later returned to find a burst of dusty debris on his walkway. The Meteoritical Society has officially registered the Charlottetown meteorite, and Dr. Herd was able to identify it after the couple sent the video to the University of Alberta’s meteorite reporting system.
Dr. Herd notes that only 69 meteorites have been found in Canada, making this discovery a rare find. What makes this incident even more remarkable is that the homeowner happened to be standing just a few minutes later at the exact spot where the meteorite hit.
