Golf star Ludvig Åberg returned to form at Torrey Pines, winning the Genesis Invitational with a dramatic comeback in the final round. The 25-year-old Swede started the day three shots behind but surged ahead, finishing with a 6-under 66 for a one-shot victory over Maverick McNealy.
Åberg’s impressive performance was fueled by his ability to stay focused and composed under pressure. He hit several key birdies and eagles throughout the round, including a clutch 7-foot putt on the par-5 18th hole that sealed his win.
The tournament, which was relocated from Riviera due to wildfires in Los Angeles, proved to be a welcome opportunity for Åberg. He had previously suffered a stomach ailment at this course three weeks prior, but felt much better this time around.
Åberg’s victory marked his third PGA Tour title and fourth worldwide, moving him to No. 4 in the world rankings. The win was also a testament to his resilience and determination, as he overcame a slow start to regain control of the tournament.
McNealy, who had opened with eight birdies in 11 holes and stretched his lead to three shots, struggled down the stretch. He bogeyed several key holes, including the par-3 11th hole, before ultimately finishing one shot behind Åberg.
The victory was all the more sweet for Åberg, as he got to present himself to Tiger Woods, the tournament host, in a more positive light after their meeting just a few weeks ago. Woods withdrew from the tournament due to personal reasons but showed his support for Åberg through the presentation of the trophy.
Åberg’s win marked a significant milestone in his career, and he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to compete at this level. “It means a lot,” he said. “This is the best feeling in golf.”
