Portugal’s centre-right minority government has collapsed, just 11 months after Prime Minister Luis Montenegro was sworn in. Another snap election is likely to be called, with polls showing similar results as the previous one and no clear majority among parties.
Frustration among voters over the lack of progress in three years is high, which could boost abstention rates. The centre-right Democratic Alliance has refused to ally with far-right populists, adding to the uncertainty.
President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has signalled that a new parliamentary election will be held in May. Opinion polls show the centre-left Socialists leading, but mostly neck-and-neck with Montenegro’s Democratic Alliance, which has ruled out deals with the far-right Chega party.
Experts predict an inconclusive result, potentially leading to another election within four years. Voter fatigue and frustration are high, as many believe there will be little change in the outcome of the next election.
