Blue Origin’s All-Female Flight Crew Wears Fashionable yet Functional Space Suits

Former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe says Blue Origin’s all-female flight crew suits are more than just a fashion statement, as they represent “the future of space”. The custom-made Monse suits were designed to be functional, comfortable and stylish. For Bowe, the suits embody three things: fashion, form, and function.

Bowe notes that traditional space suits need improvement when it comes to fit for different body types. She trained with a NASA suit technician before the mission and says designers like Monse are putting their stamp on what the future of space travel looks like. The suits feature flexible, responsive fabrics and unique designs that reflect the vision of space travelers.

Bowe’s team includes actress Gayle King, TV host Lauren Sánchez, singer Katy Perry, bioastronautics research scientist Amanda Nguyen, and film producer Kerianne Flynn. Each suit was custom-made to fit its wearer perfectly. The mission took off from Launch Site One in West Texas and lasted 11 minutes, reaching the edge of space.

During the flight, Bowe paid tribute to her late father, who wanted to be an astronaut but never got to experience space travel himself. She brought his personal American flag from Apollo 12 with her on the mission. After the flight, she plans to give one of her suits to the Museum of Flight in Seattle as a keepsake.

Bowe also wore a Bahamas flag patch during the mission as a nod to the country’s connection to Alan Shepard, who first traveled to space. The suit designers are pushing the boundaries of what space travel can be, combining style and functionality.
