500,000 Legal Immigrants Now Vulnerable to Deportation

The US Supreme Court has made over 500,000 legal immigrants vulnerable to deportation in two recent decisions. These individuals entered the country using approved pathways for people fleeing war and persecution, sharing detailed information with the government.

The court gutted humanitarian parole programs, shielding more than half a million people from deportation, but also allowed for expedited removal of those who have been in the US less than two years. This is a significant shift, as many of these immigrants could be tracked down due to their shared information and addresses with the government.

Advocates say this decision will lead to “chaotic” consequences, with panicked calls from immigrants fearing deportation. Immigration officials signal they can begin rounding up people without legal protections, citing abuse of programs that allowed them into the country in the first place.

The decisions follow complaints from top White House officials about slow deportations and come as ICE officers take aggressive measures, including detaining people at immigration courts when they show up for hearings.
