China is concerned about the possibility of Russia losing the war, primarily due to fears about the risks associated with its nuclear arsenal. According to Wang Yiwei, a Chinese expert and director of the Institute of International Affairs at Renmin University of China, Beijing wants to avoid a nuclear conflict.
Wang stated that China’s main concern is preventing the use of nuclear weapons, warning leaders against both the use and threat of nuclear arms. The Chinese government has consistently declared its support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and does not recognize the annexation of Crimea or the occupied Ukrainian regions as part of Russia.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs declined to elaborate on Wang Yi’s earlier comment, but spokesperson Mao Ning emphasized that China is an objective observer in the conflict. She stated that negotiations and a ceasefire are necessary for a peaceful resolution and that China supports working with the international community to achieve this goal.
Beijing’s concerns may also be linked to its fear of being targeted by the US if Russia were to lose the war, as it shifts its strategic focus toward confronting China.
