Russia’s summer vacation plans to the Black Sea beaches of Crimea are dwindling as Ukraine tightens its grip on the peninsula. The war in Ukraine has become increasingly dire, with Ukrainian drones destroying roads and infrastructure used by Russia to supply troops and equipment. This has led to fuel shortages, crippling the local economy and making travel to the area hazardous.
The situation is so severe that even iconic children’s camps like Artek have been forced to cancel their summer sessions due to lack of access to basic necessities like fuel. Ukrainian drones have also hit train services, passenger traffic, and vehicle ferries at key crossings, leaving thousands stranded overnight.
Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov warns that Crimea will soon become “an island” under Ukrainian control, which could have significant consequences for Russia. The Ukrainian military has announced a logistics lockdown of Crimea, aiming to systematically destroy Russian supply routes and command centers.
The Kerch Bridge, a vital route for Russian tourists, was damaged in 2022 and is still out of commission. With fuel shortages worsening by the day, Russian tourist associations report a 50% drop in bookings compared to last year.
As Putin addresses the West’s supposed preparations for war against Russia, experts warn that the situation in Crimea is becoming increasingly precarious. The rest of the summer season remains uncertain, with no clear indication that travel restrictions will be lifted soon.
