Measles Outbreak in Jefferson County Confirmed

A measles case has been confirmed in Jefferson County, Kentucky, Mayor Craig Greenberg announced during a news conference. The patient, a child, recently traveled internationally to a country experiencing a measles outbreak.

Health officials are conducting contact tracing and urging isolation for those who may have been exposed. This is the fifth case of measles in the state this year, mostly among unvaccinated individuals.

Dr. Kris Bryant, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at Norton Children’s Hospital, believes the child’s case is isolated but acknowledges that measles is highly contagious. He urges people to take precautions and get vaccinated.

The Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness is working to contain the outbreak. Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent measles, with two doses recommended for children under six.
