Meta Resolves Widespread App Outage After 3-Hour Downtime

Meta has resolved a technical issue causing widespread outages of its apps, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The outage lasted over three hours, with users reporting difficulties in accessing the platforms.

The company acknowledged the problem and apologized for any inconvenience, stating it was working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. By mid-afternoon on Wednesday, Meta reported being 99% of the way through fixing the issue.

Downdetector, a website tracking outage reports, showed over 70,000 reports from Instagram users, while Facebook had up to 105,000 outage reports. Other apps, such as WhatsApp and Messenger, also experienced issues.

This outage follows several large-scale tech outages in 2024, including a massive Microsoft Outlook and Teams outage in late November and the largest IT outage in history earlier this year, which affected Fortune 500 companies and cost over $5 billion in losses.
