Syria’s brutal regime under former President Bashar Assad has come into full view as rebels dig through his liberated prisons, searching for victims of torture and imprisonment. Thousands of Syrians stormed facilities across the country in hopes of releasing their loved ones.
Rebel leader Abu Mohammed al-Golani vowed to dissolve remaining security forces and close prisons used to house political dissidents. However, thousands were released alive while others were found dead or remain missing.
US prosecutors have indicted two Syrian officials accused of running a torture facility at Mezzeh air force base in Damascus. The US alleges victims included political prisoners, peaceful protesters, and a 26-year-old American woman believed to be executed.
The most notorious prison was Saydnaya, where dozens were freed on Sunday but none have been found since. Syrians continue to search for hidden cells and documents that might shed light on their family members’ fates.
Amnesty International estimates that between 10,000 to 20,000 people were held in Saydnaya as of 2017, with routine mass executions reported. An estimated 150,000 people were detained or went missing since 2011.
