Xi Jinping Cements China-Russia Ties as India Prepares for SCO Summit

China President Xi Jinping recently stated that the country’s relationship with Russia is “the most stable, mature and strategically significant” among major world powers. The comments were made during a meeting with Russian parliament chairman Vyacheslav Volodin.

The 2022 invasion of Ukraine by Russia has led to an increase in relations between Beijing and Moscow. China has not publicly denounced the war nor called for Moscow’s withdrawal from Ukrainian territory. This move is seen as a significant development in the strengthening of the two countries’ ties.

Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit China next week to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin. The meeting marks his first trip to the country in over seven years and aims to strengthen Global South solidarity.

During his visit, Modi is expected to hold bilateral meetings with Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Analysts predict that the SCO summit will focus on confidence-building measures, including troop pullbacks and easing of trade barriers, to sustain a thaw in ties between India and China.

The summit is significant as it marks a major step towards rebuilding relations between Beijing and New Delhi. With Russia’s invasion of Ukraine casting a shadow over international relations, this gathering of global leaders may provide an opportunity for the three nations to build bridges and forge new alliances.
