Former Google Employee Quits for $1M to Launch AI Startup

A former Google employee has left his high-paying job to start his own artificial intelligence startup. Yousuf Imran, a 41-year-old account executive, earned nearly $1 million last year at Google but decided to take the risk and launch Mangosteen Studio in April.

Imran’s decision was driven by “Fear of Missing Out” (FOMO) as companies like OpenAI and Anthropic offered stock packages that could be “life-changing.” Despite having a high salary, Imran felt he needed to own equity in his own company. He credited his success to an “immigrant hustle” and attributed his performance to developing a deep understanding of customers’ businesses and becoming well-versed in AI and machine learning.

Imran spent nights and weekends experimenting with AI tools outside work, building apps and side projects. The recent Google layoffs also made him rethink his long-term career plans, reinforcing his decision to “bet on” himself. He left with savings to fund the business for two years and aims to bootstrap it without raising outside funding.
